"When BSAVA approached us, they weren't looking for another list of recommendations. They needed a practical roadmap that aligned technology, business priorities and member expectations, giving every team confidence in the direction of travel." - Timberyard Project Lead

BSAVA partnered with Timberyard at a critical point in its digital transformation. As its services, platforms and member offering continued to expand, the organisation needed a clearer strategy to bring everything together into a connected digital experience.

Rather than jumping straight into delivery, we led a structured discovery programme that brought business and technical stakeholders around the same table. Through workshops, platform reviews and user journey mapping, we established a shared understanding of the current landscape and identified the priorities that would have the greatest impact for members.

The outcome wasn't simply a strategy document. It was a practical roadmap, backed by evidence, that gave BSAVA the confidence to move forward with aligned priorities, clearer governance and a scalable foundation for the next phase of delivery.

Where they began

The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) had an ambitious vision: create a digital ecosystem that made it easier for veterinary professionals to access education, manage memberships, register for events and purchase resources through one connected experience.

Years of organic growth had resulted in several platforms supporting different parts of the organisation. While each system served an important purpose, they weren't designed to work together. Members regularly moved between disconnected journeys, while internal teams managed duplicated processes across multiple platforms.

One of the biggest opportunities centred on ecommerce. Purchasing a membership, booking an event and accessing learning content often involved separate systems and inconsistent checkout experiences. Defining a single basket model became a key priority, allowing members to complete multiple transactions through one seamless journey.

There was also increasing demand from members for a more intuitive and unified experience, one that reflected the breadth of BSAVA’s value while being easy to navigate across devices and touchpoints.

The opportunity was to step back and take a strategic view to understand user needs, audit the existing technology landscape and define a future-ready architecture that could support BSAVA’s long-term vision. Central to this was aligning with BSAVA’s strategic adoption of a MACH architecture approach as a key delivery mechanism for flexibility and scalability. This meant moving beyond incremental improvements and instead establishing a clear, evidence-based foundation for transformation.

Where they are now

The discovery phase provided BSAVA with a clear picture of where the organisation is today and a practical roadmap for where it can go next.

Working alongside stakeholders from across the business, we defined a member-first digital vision that brings together education, events, memberships and ecommerce into a more connected experience. The discovery also established the requirements for a unified basket, making it possible for members to access multiple products and services through a single purchasing journey.

On the technical side, the programme outlined a modular architecture aligned with MACH principles. Recommendations included decoupling front-end experiences from back-end systems, improving interoperability between platforms and introducing more flexible content management capabilities to support future development.

Since completing discovery, the programme has continued to evolve alongside BSAVA's wider ambitions. The roadmap now extends beyond the website to include the organisation's mobile application, while an orchestration platform has been identified to coordinate integrations and deliver a consistent experience across every digital touchpoint.

Today, BSAVA has more than a strategic vision. It has an agreed roadmap, aligned stakeholders and a clear delivery framework that provides the confidence to move into implementation with shared priorities and a scalable technical foundation.
