All Saints Church, Toftrees

All Saints Church in Toftrees, Norfolk, serves as both an invaluable community hub and a site of rich historical value. However, the church faced the challenges of a small congregation and significant financial costs to maintain both the church building and its surrounding grounds. Due to severe structural concerns and its overall condition, Toftrees Church was placed on the Heritage at Risk Register in 2023

In 2025, the Heritage Recorded Project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, was launched alongside crucial restoration work to protect the church’s future and preserve this important part of Norfolk’s heritage.

As part of the project, Toftrees Church sought our help in digitising its burial records through a dedicated local history website in order to safeguard this important local heritage for future generations.

Where they began

Faced with the challenges of a small congregation and significant maintenance costs, both the church building and its surrounding burial grounds were at risk. Many headstones and grave markers had become weathered, unstable, and increasingly difficult to read, making ongoing upkeep harder to manage.

As inscriptions continued to fade, important pieces of local history were at risk of being lost over time. With no easily accessible way to view Toftrees Church burial records, preserving the history of Toftrees became an increasing concern.

Where they are now

The dedicated website we developed significantly improved community access to historical and genealogical information while preserving this important local heritage for future generations. The site provides a comprehensive record of all graves within the church and surrounding grounds, including detailed information about those buried there, supported by GRO records and historical references.

It also features an interactive map of the church and burial grounds, with pins marking each grave location alongside additional information about the extensive history of Toftrees Church.

The digitised records can now be easily accessed by anyone wishing to explore their family history or learn more about the history of Toftrees and its residents.
